During this time, blood and the inner lining of the uterus are released, often causing cramps and severe pain in the lower back, pelvic area, stomach, and legs. This discomfort can make daily activities challenging for many women. But how do female athletes manage to play high-intensity sports like cricket, tennis, or badminton during their periods? Recently, Indian women’s cricket star Sneh Rana appeared on a media show and shared how women cricketers handle period pain while still performing at their best on the field.

How Female Athletes Manage Period Pain

When asked about the challenges female athletes face, including periods, Sneh explained, “It’s a very important topic to talk about because many people don’t know about it, and there isn’t enough awareness. Personally, I get a lot of cramps, and during matches, we sometimes have to use medicine to manage the pain.” She added that playing matches while having periods comes with cramps, mood swings, and performance pressure. Yet, athletes find ways to manage and continue performing at their best.

Performing Well Even During Pain

Sneh shared, “There are times when the pain is very high, but if you are representing your country or even playing at a domestic level, you cannot stop. Yes, it is difficult, but as a sportsperson, you become mentally strong and know that this will happen, and you have to manage it.”

Practical Tips from Athletes

She further explained, “Another way is to carry hot pads during periods. We use them off the field, but this should not stop you from doing what you want. You should never think that having periods means you cannot play. For me, it’s the opposite – I perform even better when I have periods.”

Mind Over Matter

Sneh’s story highlights the strength and determination of female athletes. Despite physical discomfort, they find ways to stay focused and excel. Her advice inspires other women to not let periods stop them from achieving their goals, on or off the field.
